The home opener for the Stratford University softball was cold and overcast, but the action on the field made up for the weather as the Cardinals and Penn St. Beaver split two one run games, as Penn St. Beaver took the opener 6-5 and the Cardinals overcame an 8th inning deficit to take the nightcap 7-6.
Brooke Olsavicky, Karla Martinez and Shy Cansler each collected two hits, with Cansler driving in two runs in the loss, while Hayley Winfree and Sadie Sly each added a double. Katie Farrow took the loss in the circle, throwing 7 innings while allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs to go along with 4 strikeouts.
In a back and forth nightcap, the Cardinals saved their best work for the later innings, as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to rie the game and overcame a 6-5 deficit in the bottom of the 8th innings by scoring 2 runs and winning in walk off fashion.
Winfree set the table at the top of the lineup by going 4-5, including a double and scoring 3 runs, Julia Conner added 3 hits, while Farrow and Sly each added 2 hits. Sly drove in 3 runs, but none were as big as when she stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in a tie game in the bottom of the 8th inning and drove a single to leftfield to send the Cardinals home a 7-6 winner.
Veronica Acevedo got the start in the circle, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing only 2 earned runs, while Farrow earned the win in game 2 by throwing 2.1 innings, allowing only 1 earned run.
Stratford returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1:30 pm doubleheader against Washington Adventist.
